Home starter packs for women leaving refuge

Women we support often leave refuge with very few belongings, moving into flats or houses with not even a kettle. Can you help us to fund starter packs for women to make their first few weeks in their new homes more comfortable?

Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid supports women and children affected by any form of violence. We provide: Confidential helpline, refuge accommodation, community based drop-in services and help with civil and legal proceedings. We deliver awareness work with children and young people.

Story

Women are staying in refuge longer than ever. What used to be a stay of a few weeks, is now many months and in some cases well over a year.

But we are so pleased to see movement in the social housing sector, and thanks to properties becoming available, many of our residents will be moving into their new place over the next few weeks. But because of the volume of women moving on, and the loss of income from our charity shops and events due to the Coronavirus epidemic, we need help to fund packs for women moving into their homes.

Homes are often completely empty - no white goods, no furniture - not even a kettle in which to make that vital first cup of tea. Can you imagine moving home with nothing apart from a few bags of clothing and perhaps your most prized possessions?

Help us to fund packs which include:-

Duvet, Pillows, Duvet Set, Dinner set, cutlery set, saucepans, microwave, toaster, kettle and an airbed.

Women have told us

"having help (in this way) has made my children feel happy and confident''

"I thought coming to refuge that I would not get any support and would be just left on my own... but I've had loads of donations ...and I have also received a lot of mental and emotional support from staff and now receiving support to finally moving out. To women who need refuge I say do come and don't overthink it. You wont regret it in the end whatever you are faced with. It's worth coming here as being here teaches you a lot about yourself and the things you didn't know you had."

If we are in the lucky position of receiving funding for this work elsewhere, or going over the set target, all money raised will still go towards supporting women.
