We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

We all know the devastating link between the railway and suicide. That’s why in May 2028, LNER partnered with suicide prevention charity CALM.

The objectives were simple: raise vital funds for CALM’s lifesaving services, but crucially raise awareness of the issue among both staff and customers.

In the seven years of partnership, LNER has achieved incredible things - and together with CALM have created a truly lifesaving (and award-winning) partnership, leaving a lasting legacy on the UK.

LNER and CALM’s partnership has raised a staggering £700,000, which is enough to answer over 57,000 lifesaving calls on CALM’s suicide prevention helpline, potentially saving as many lives.

But it doesn’t stop there... LNER have committed to partner with CALM for a further 3 years, with the aim to reach £1,000,000 in funds raised for CALM’s lifesaving services.

However, they can’t do it alone. Your donation will mean more people can access the support they need to find hope and a way forward - keeping more loved ones and families together.

Just £12.20 could answer a lifesaving call to CALM's suicide prevention helpline. Help us save lives today.

"We would like to say a big thank you to our customers and colleagues for their continued support for CALM. It is truly inspiring to see how our customers, colleagues and communities have united to raise a tremendous amount of money for CALM’s vital life-saving services, providing help and support for people when they need it most..” David Horne, Managing Director at LNER

The history of this industry-leading partnership!

In year 1, LNER began giving customers the option to donate their ‘Delay Repay’ compensation to CALM, a mechanism that has gone on to raise well over £200,000.

In year 2, LNER branded up their men’s toilets at York station with CALM messaging and signposting to an at-risk group and CALM trained up hundreds of LNER staff as CALM champions and attended Pride events with LNER up and down the country.

In year 3, despite limitations due to COVID-19, LNER found new and innovative ways to fundraise, from selling bespoke face masks, to creating a CALM x LNER cookbook.

In year 4 LNER raised over £50,000 auctioning off vintage train nameplates to avid train fans, while also introducing an LNER Perks option so that customers have the option to donate via their loyalty scheme.

For their 5th anniversary, they went one step further - LNER gave CALM the ultimate honour by dedicating an entire train to them. A bespoke LNER Azuma called ‘You Belong’ was launched, alongside the unveiling of a News Against Living Miserably newsstand in Newcastle Central Station, with LNER also matching donations from Delay Repay.
