Organised by Concern Worldwide, UKStand in solidarity with families displaced by conflict and raise vital funds to support them. From July to September we are asking you to give up your home comforts for just one night and sleep under the stars to shine a light on their experiences.
Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gaza and Yemen are only a few of the countries where we are working with local communities in our mission to end extreme poverty – whatever it takes. Currently millions of families around the world are living in tents and displacement camps, with no place to feel safe and call home.
Meet Ayan*, a mother now living in a displacement camp in Daynile District, Somalia. Ayan is one of four million people internally displaced in Somalia, forced from their homes by a combination of conflict, drought, and flooding. Describing her first months in the displacement camp she told our team:
"I can't even describe it. It was just one bad day after another. My children cried from hunger. There were nights we went to sleep without eating anything at all. I used to grow peas and beans," she says. "We had food, we had animals, and we survived on what we made."
In Somalia, our programmes are helping families access nutrition, clean water, sanitation, primary healthcare, and cash assistance. For Ayan, that support has offered something invaluable: stability—the chance to plan for the future and hold on to hope.
“I want my children to finish their studies and live in a good home,” she says.
Ayan - and countless others - are working tirelessly to create a better future for their families. Together, we can support their efforts and stand alongside them in this journey.
