Great North Run 2023 · 10 September 2023 ·
Fiona attended at Newcastle University where she was one of only four women reading Chemical Engineering. Her subsequent career in industry was similarly marked by the lack of opportunity for women in engineering and representation in industry in any senior roles. This was a cause of frustration and some amusement but this addressing lack of opportunity has become one of the focal points of the Fiona Foundation.
Cell Block Science provides a way for us to contribute to this cause - it aims to give women in prisons the chance to learn about science as well as offering female academics the opportunity to teach and share their knowledge and experiences. The scheme also allows the inmates to teach their families what they have learnt in the lessons. This not only provides education to marginalised groups in society but also gives the families more time with their loved one.
Friends and family are running for the Great North Run half marathon with the main goal of raising money for this course.
Previous, years of the Cell Block Science have been extremely successful, with high levels of engagement and satisfaction from both those in the prisons and their families.
The funds raised can also be used for other causes supported by the Fiona Foundation, including the Kids Action Thru Science (KATS) programme. More information can be found on the Fiona Foundation Just Giving page or website: https://www.fionafoundation.co.uk/
