'Cherish the Children' has been set up as a charity to raise funds to help cover some of the every-day costs associated with running schools and feeding programmes for children in the slums of Nakuru, Kenya.

Story

In an ideal world, the amazing street children attending schools in the slums of Nakuru would have access to the same resources as the children who go to the state funded schools, but sadly this is not the case. For many of the children education is their only chance of getting out of poverty and the feeding programme provided by the schools, their only source of regular meals.

A recent change in the curriculum in Kenya, moving away from traditional chalk and talk methods, means that additional resources are needed. Mini-white boards would be perfect but maintaining a stock of usable pens would be too expensive for these schools with no state funding. As an alternative I am involved in a project making these mini-chalkboards which the children are using in the photo (taken on a recent volunteering trip to Cherish School).

The A4 size boards are made from mdf and can be repainted as needed with chalkboard paint. The individual cloths attached to each board are knitted by volunteers using cotton yarn and the chalk can be purchased cheaply in Kenya.

We are hoping to raise funds to cover the cost of materials for making sets of the chalkboards for the 5 schools we work with in Kenya.

A donation of just £2 will cover the cost of materials needed to make one board, a cloth and buy chalk for the student. (Volunteers travelling to the schools will be able to take the boards and demonstrate how they can benefit teaching and learning)

Any donations will be gratefully received and we are hoping to have several busy weekends of chalkboard making on the calendar before our next volumteering trip, to work with these amazing children.

If wish to be entered in the prize draw for a free subscritpion please put your twitter username in the comment. 1 entry for each £2 donated.
