Why Kenya? Why Now?
In Ukambani, 44% of people live below the poverty line, and water scarcity is a daily crisis. Shockingly, up to 85% of precious rainwater is lost as surface runoff because there’s no way to store it.
Families are forced to spend hours each day fetching water, leaving little time for school, work, or farming. Worse still, much of that water carries deadly diseases.
But there is a simple, proven solution: sand dams.
What is a sand dam?
A sand dam is a low-cost, low-maintenance structure that captures rainwater underground, protecting it from evaporation and contamination.
The Impact:
• Clean, year-round water for drinking, farming, and livestock
• Fewer water-borne diseases and healthier families
• Time savings for women and children, boosting school attendance
• Sustainable farming practices that improve food security and income
• Climate resilience in drought-prone areas
“After building the sand dam, I hope my life will shift from struggling every day for water to building a future with it — growing food, raising healthy children, and having the time to dream beyond survival.”
