Supporting Flood-Affected and Underprivileged Communities in Sri Lanka

As the Christmas season approaches—a time of celebration and togetherness—many enjoy the warmth of family and gifts. Yet countless Tamil-speaking individuals and families in Sri Lanka face severe hardship and uncertainty caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Closes 31/03/2026

SCOT has supported Tamil-speaking people in Sri Lanka for over forty years. Tamil areas lag behind the rest of the country, ranking lowest in education, employment, health, and overall socio-economic wellbeing.

Story

As we enter the festive season—planning gatherings and choosing gifts for our loved ones—our flood-affected brethren in Sri Lanka are struggling simply to survive. The worst hit are families in low-lying areas: daily-wage earners, the unemployed, and those already living in deep poverty.

The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides in Sri Lanka has exceeded 450 people, as the country grapples with one of its worst weather disasters in years.

More than 350 are missing, and some 20,000 homes have been destroyed, sending 108,000 people to state-run temporary shelters, the Disaster Management Centre reported.

Officials said that about a third of the country was without electricity or running water as a state of emergency was announced, in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

While we think of celebration, they worry about tomorrow—about feeding their children and whether their homes will still have walls or roofs when the waters recede.

The Standing Committee of Tamil-speaking people (SCOT) has already mobilised emergency support, working with Rotarians to reach communities devastated by floods, the cyclone, and landslides across the North, East, and Hill Country. But our resources are limited, and we are now forced to draw from funds originally set aside for long-term education and employment programmes.

We urgently appeal for your support to meet our people’s most basic needs—food, clothing, and initial resettlement assistance—through this SCOT JustGiving emergency crowdfunding campaign.

Every pound you give goes directly to families who have lost everything. How many we can help depends entirely on your generosity.

Please donate what you can. Every pound brings relief to a family in need.
