The Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim is a much-loved annual charity event held at Sandy Bay on Christmas Day. Since 1965, it has brought thousands of people together for a festive dip while raising vital funds for local charities and community organisations. Swimmers of all ages take part in colourful costumes, supported by generous spectators, volunteers, sponsors and local businesses. Every registration, donation and fundraising effort helps worthwhile causes make a positive difference in Porthcawl and the surrounding community. More than a swim, it is a joyful celebration of community spirit, generosity and Christmas tradition.

Story

A cold dip. A warm heart. A Christmas that makes a difference.

On Christmas morning, while many are unwrapping presents, thousands of swimmers and supporters gather at Sandy Bay for a different kind of Christmas tradition.

There are festive costumes, cheers from the shore and a shared determination to brave the cold for something that matters: our community.

Since the first formal Swim in 1965, this much-loved Porthcawl tradition has raised more than £175,000 for charities and community organisations. In 2026, we’re inviting you to help that generosity go even further.

Your support makes a difference close to home

Over the years, the Swim has supported Porthcawl RNLI, local lifeguard clubs, Sandville Self Help Foundation, Porthcawl First Responders and Porthcawl Stroke Club.

It has also given back to the places and groups that help our community thrive: Porthcawl Museum, Porthcawl Male Voice Choir, local Guides and Scouts, Porthcawl & Pyle Boxing Club, Porthcawl YMCA and local schools, including Heronsbridge School and Newton Primary School PTA.

These are organisations that bring people together, offer support and create opportunities for people in and around our town.

That generosity reaches across Wales too. Past beneficiaries include Wales Air Ambulance, LATCH, Y Bont, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cymru and Kidney Wales. More recently, the Swim supported Alzheimer’s Society Cymru in 2024, followed by 2wish and Sir Gareth Edwards Cancer Charity as our headline charities in 2025.

Every one of those names represents a reason to take the plunge.

You don’t have to get wet to make a splash

Whether you’re braving the sea, cheering from the beach or supporting from afar, you can help us continue this tradition of giving.

Please donate what you can, share this campaign or set up your own fundraising page for a cause close to your heart. You might be swimming in memory of someone special, thanking a charity that has helped your family or simply giving something back to the community you love.

The chilly dip lasts only a few minutes. The difference we make together can last far longer.

Join us on Christmas Day 2026 at Sandy Bay, Porthcawl, and help turn a brave dip into something brilliant for our community.

Cold sea. Warm hearts. One generous community.

Diolch yn fawr — thank you for your support.
