We have a small herd of lovely cows at the Sanctuary, who have come from a variety of backgrounds to live out their natural lives here at Ferne - which could be over 20 years!
To introduce you to just a few of the characters, we have Jemima, a short leg Dexter. She is a wonderful Aunt to George who originally came in as a calf with his mum Myrtle, sadly we lost Myrtle to old age, but Jemima continues to look after George even though he has now grown up! Jemima is so small that many people think she is a calf. Due to her size, she doesnt fit into the crush properly when she needs to have her feet trimmed so one of our dedicated team has been clicker training her to be haltered and calmly have her feet handled.
Willow and Bamboo are mother and daughter. They came to us when their owner hadnt quite realised how much space they would need. Willow is a lovely kind cow and enjoys a good scratch, Bamboo can be quite shy around people but loves a good play with young George.
When the fields are too wet, our herd come into their yard but a large area of this is hardcore which just isnt comfortable underfoot!
To solve the problem and keep our cows comfy we need to cover the area with interlocking cow matting which will provide a comfortable surface for our cows when they cant access the fields. The matts are also hygienic, as they are made from non-porous vulcanised rubber that can easily be cleaned and thanks to the anti-slip surface are much safer for hooves of all ages!
To cover the existing hardcore area will cost £3500.
A comfy cow is a happy cow, could you make a donation to help us soothe those hooves and keep all our cows happy?
