Story
Dr Ashley Roberts, Consultant Clinical Radiologist and his team have taken a concept, initially from Taiwan, modified in the USA but now re-engineered in Cardiff and adapted to fit a number of applications relevant to the current Covid19 Pandemic.
During intubation, endoscopy and other lifesaving procedures patients regularly exhale or cough creating an aerosol effect. Covid19 has made this impact a danger to front line nurses, doctors and healthcare workers.
The team refined the design and has had manufactured a number of containment boxes (The Intubation Box) which have gone through recent hospital trials with great success. The boxes have contained the spread of the infectious virus and after a deep clean, in a manner approved by the hospital, are ready for re-use. Boxes are already being delivered and trialled at a number of Hospital Trusts throughout Wales, England and Scotland.
Constraints with NHS funding has necessitated securing private funding from family, friends and colleagues. However, as the project is progressing rapidly, further funding is now a matter of urgency to supply more of these units, in order to protect NHS frontline workers.
With sufficient funds these units can be supplied to many other Health Trusts in the UK, thus potentially saving lives nationwide.
