CPRE Centenary Woodland Grove and Hedgerow Appeal

To mark our centenary of protecting the countryside, CPRE Avon and Bristol has launched a £10,000 crowdfunder to support ongoing work for hedgerow restoration and to create a commemorative Woodland Grove with 100 native trees.

CENTENARY WOODLAND GROVE PLANTING DAY · 1 March 2026 ·

Story

The Woodland Grove is in honour of the landscapes CPRE has worked to protect since 1926 and it serves to inspire a new generation of countryside custodians. Every donation to the campaign supports our planting and maintenance of 100 native trees including hazel, hawthorn, wild pear, bird cherry and rowan. The site is designed as a rich, varied habitat, providing food, shelter and nesting opportunities for birds, bats, hedgehogs and pollinators.

Located off the A37 near Pensford and forming part of the Great Avon Wood, it is open to the public year-round, offering an opportunity to witness the woodland’s growth over time and its impact on local biodiversity.

Our planting day on 1st March 2026 was celebrated by an enthusiastic group of members from the Bristol Youth Orchestra and Babbasa, a local enterprise support group for young people from diverse backgrounds to gain experience of potential career opportunities. They joined together to master the task of planting the100 trees. It was both fun and rewarding to see their efforts bear physical shape. Later that month, the orchestra members staged a further CPRE Centenary event at Bristol Beacon – ‘A Concert for the Countryside’ – an evening of music and film emphasising the powerful connection between culture and conservation.

In addition to woodland creation, the crowdfunder will contribute to CPRE’s long-term hedgerow restoration efforts. The Hedgerow Heroes campaign aims to plant or lay 10 kilometres of hedgerow by spring 2027; to date, the charity has restored 6.42 kilometres, with further public support essential to reaching its goal.
