Story
Crediton Arts Centre is a landmark of cultural significance in Crediton, Devon. The Victorian building housed Haywards Primary School from 1881. The Crediton Arts Centre has now been resident in this building for over 30 years. We are the heart of culture in Crediton programming performances, films, and art classes by both local and visiting artists.
We produce many local events such as Shakespeare in the Square, Crediton Food Festival, Flag Project, Crediton Town Trail, Busk It!, and Christmas in Crediton. The Arts Centre runs a programme of performances, films, and art classes by both local and visiting artists. Crediton Youth Theatre, Tot’s Play, and Brown Paper Bag Theatre Company are resident groups.
Our building is old however, and in need of an upgrade to much of its fabric. We are currently running an upgrade project, ‘Making it Better’, to improve both the facility and the programme we deliver. The building is small with limitations, spaces having to double up in their uses. We are the only arts centre in this area of Devon and upgrades are now necessary to host a greater number of events and keep our audiences coming. This initiative is being run in phases as we raise money with the first phase complete which included a new heating system and kitchen. Building on this we are now raising money for Phase 2 including new stage lighting, and floors throughout.
