Crying out for magic!

Campaign by Magic for Smiles

We aim to raise over £5000 for trips to Egypt/the region (for mainly Gazan and Sudanese traumatised kids) to conduct more than 20 magic shows & workshops, and be on standby for shows in the UK for refugees and asylum seekers. Magic for trauma relief!

We use magic as a tool for enhanced wellbeing through psychosocial support amongst vulnerable and often traumatised children, mostly but not only refugees. To this end, we provide magic shows and tuition, especially in Egypt and Jordan. Magic restores the joy that has been robbed by war.

Story

Magic is such an exciting and under-utilised tool for trauma relief within psychosocial support for children, robbed of their childhood due to war. In previous years we toured the region, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon giving shows and workshops to mostly Syrians. But since October 2023, we have used our very limited resources to focus on Gaza. There are some 50000 Gazans in Egypt and some in Jordan for medical treatment, and many more Sudanese refugees in Egypt due to the war (about half a million).

The reason for the Gaza focus is that well over 20,000 children have been killed, the remainder are maimed, orphaned, and anyway so traumatised, and a genocide has been taking place and an unknown number are under the rubble. The situation that has spread to the West Bank could easily be solved if certain politicians valued humanity over politics and put an end to double standards, and we have therefore increased our campaigning component. However, we also currently target Sudanese children, displaced by the much under-reported war and with the appalling humanitarian situation in Sudan.

Earlier this year we conducted a show for a local group in Cairo for Gazan children. They receive no support from the government and loved the show:

An international NGO working with Gazans in Cairo said in 2026:

"He [Jamie] presented a wonderful magic show for children displaced from Gaza to Egypt. The show was full of joy, laughter and positive energy. The children were fully engaged and truly enjoyed every moment. It was clear how much happiness and comfort the performance brought to them at this difficult time. We sincerely thank Jamie for his kindness, compassion, and the unforgettable entertaining experience he created for the children".

We will also do some shows in the UK for asylum seekers and refugees. While we used to do many shows in the UK for asylum seeker children and families in hotels, the demand has fallen sharply due to the political climate.
