In 2015, three Caribbean led organisations joined forces to set up and run the Caribbean STEM Coaching Club: the Caribbean Diaspora for Science, Technology & Innovation-UK ("CADSTI-UK"), Future Think and the British Foundation of the University of the West Indies ("BFUWI"). The three organizations are represented by George Marecheau, Penny Carballo-Smith and Rawle Parris respectively.
The Club's mission is to strengthen the STEM and other skills of as many Caribbean families as possible to enable them to flourish in a fast and constantly changing, technology driven world of work.
The Club has supported 49 Caribbean students and their families to date and expect to support another 15 students and their families over 2019/20.
We have upped our game this year by engaging specialist Maths teachers based in the Caribbean to provide 12 one-to-one sessions of online Maths coaching to 12 students in the Club between October and December 2019. Then between January and March 2020, specialist Maths teachers will be running Maths master classes at Harrow School. Parenting discussion groups will run simultaneously, empowering parents to support their children academically and holistically, and in particular, in ways that would help them to develop critical employability skills and mindsets.
A network of Caribbean professionals will serve as role models to motivate and inspire, and to share study strategies as well as guidance on effective organization and self management skills. Our March 2020 Careers Day will feature industry experts who will open eyes to exciting new career opportunities emerging both in the UK and globally.
