Story
The Cumbres Teacher Preparation program is an inclusive learning community and scholarship program that has served students at UNC since 1997. Over the last two decades, Cumbres has evolved to become a comprehensive program designed to support education majors who want to be ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers through a four-tiered design that encourages them to bond as a cohort, support each other emotionally and academically, and develop leadership skills that will help them be hired when they graduate as well as be compassionate teachers of English Language Learners in K-12 education.
Admitted students are welcomed in a caring and inclusive community where they get to take classes together as a cohort, work with a mentor teacher, attend leadership workshops, complete community service and present a capstone project as they pursue their degree. Since 1997, 357 students have graduated from the Cumbres program. There are a total 99 active participants in the Cumbres program: 59% are first-generation students and 53% are Latinx students.
Your gift to the Cumbres Program at the University of Northern Colorado will provide Cumbres students with a renewable scholarship of $750/semester . During this week it is our goal to raise $3,000 the equivalent of two scholarships. Reaching our goal will allow us to continue to recruit and support students who wish to be teachers and work specifically with English Language Learners.
Help us continue to provide critical financial support for future ESL students by making a gift today!
