Story
Our CEO, Jonathan Mayes (JJ), is taking on an epic cycling pilgrimage, physically pedalling a path to shine a national spotlight on the world-class music found in England and Wales’ extraordinary cathedrals and historic church buildings. Over 50 days, he will visit more than 100 choirs, covering a staggering 3,000 miles all to raise vital funds for cathedral music.
Behind the soaring sounds of these choirs lies a fragile reality: cathedral music depends heavily on charitable giving and the generosity of donors. Every day, professional musicians, organists, and choristers provide remarkable performances at the highest artistic level, mostly offered entirely free to audiences. This pilgrimage isn’t just about distance; it’s about highlighting the urgent need for support and visibility for these extraordinary musical foundations.
The relentless miles, steep climbs, adverse weather, and physical endurance JJ faces mirror the resilience and devotion of those who sustain this tradition. Just as the pilgrimage demands stamina, so too does safeguarding cathedral music in an increasingly challenging financial landscape.
“The pilgrimage is both a physical and spiritual journey,” says JJ. “Cathedral music is world-class and freely given, but it is not free to provide. Through this journey, we aim to shine a light on the fact that you are never far from an extraordinary musical experience, and to highlight the need to safeguard it, for the music and the people who make it possible.”
The funds raised will help Cathedral Music Trust continue its vital work. Donations play a pivotal role: music departments receive very little public funding, and the Trust receives none.
With your support, we can strengthen the sector and deliver life-changing projects, for example:
- £5,000 could fund an essential professional training programme for early-career cathedral musicians.
- £10,000 could establish a sustainable Early Years (0-5) programme, helping children from diverse backgrounds discover their singing voices.
- £15,000 could support a chorister recruitment programme in partnership with local schools.
Every donation helps ensure this extraordinary musical tradition not only survives but flourishes for generations to come.
