Story
We (Dallinghoo Church Repair Fund) are actively raising funds to maintain the fabric of our fabulous Church St Mary’s, Dallinghoo. Over the past few years we have undertaken a large and very successful restoration programme and so we now need to keep on top of the ongoing repairs. This will likely cost us about £5,000 a year
The Church dates back to Norman times and is of unusual design, with the tower now at the wrong end. It used to be in the middle with the chancel at the east end but due to poor maintenance a couple of hundred years ago part of the tower fell down and demolished it, something we are keen not to repeat. You can see the outline of the old chancel roof above the big east window in the tower and note the brickwork at the top of the tower.
The nave dates to around 1150 with the two extensions added by the Victorians, the further is the porch with the second built to house the organ. On the north side is a more modern building which used be the village school, now the vestry.
The tower used to have a peal of 5 bells but four were mysteriously removed many years ago and their whereabouts has been lost in the mists of time, the hunt for them continues to this day.
The Dallinghoo Historic Church Repair Appeal
The DCRF was formed some 34 years ago as a non-religious organisation to maintain and repair the building so it would always be there for people to enjoy. Please help us to maintain this church for future generations.
