Our commitment to an inclusive and accessible culture opens the doors to the very best, no matter their background.

Story

Honouring David Cousins

David Cousins (1940–2025), best known as the frontman of the Strawbs, was a pioneering voice in British music whose career spanned six decades of folk, rock and progressive music, as well as ground breaking work in independent radio.

He studied Mathematics and Statistics at Leicester in the 1960s, where he founded the University Folk Society and served as President of the Jazz Club. His passion for music and community left an indelible mark on campus life.

David remained closely connected to Leicester throughout his life. A supporter of the Attenborough Arts Centre — founded by his friend Lord Richard Attenborough — he championed its mission to make the arts inclusive and accessible. In recognition of his achievements, the University awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 and an Honorary Doctor of Music in 2023.

The Fund

The David Cousins Fund has been created in partnership with the Attenborough Arts Centre to continue David’s legacy. The fund will support music scholarships at the University of Leicester, nurturing talented students and helping them thrive on and off stage.
