Deafway has been supporting the Deaf community at home and overseas since 1894. As well as our residential home in Preston we have many charitable projects which receive no statutory funding. We need over £125,00 a year to keep all of these wonderful projects running.
In Lancashire we need funding for our Dream Activities project and our Sensory Music project both of which improve the health and well being of our residents; we also have a project which provides Interpreter Drop In Sessions for the Deaf community enabling them the much needed access to services which they currently do not have.
In Nepal we fund education for Deaf children and adults in remote areas. We also have schools in remote rural areas of both Uganda and Kenya. We have received information from our partners in Kenya that the community there is facing starvation due to the lock down restrictions. Since Kenya went into its version of lock down, the local economy has ground to a halt. No-one is working, buying or selling. There is no money circulating and the end result is that the people living in the greatest poverty are starving. They have no reserves, no savings and nowhere to turn. As the school has closed and the children are at home this will be having a significant impact on them, and their families. Most of the children come from the poorest families, we have met families of 5 who survive on less than £5 a week. Many families rely on growing some of their own food on small pieces of land but harvesting will not happen for some time yet making the situation particularly difficult. We understand that these conditions will be similar for the children and adults supported by our projects in both Uganda and Nepal which are in poorer remote areas where many families live in dire poverty.
This Christmas please help us to continue to offer support to all the vulnerable Deaf children and adults we work with in both the UK and overseas, especially at this particularly challenging time.
If you are able to make a donation we will send you a link to a half an hour long British Sign Language lesson or if your donation is £6 or more you can choose to have a birdbox made our residents in return to thank you for your generosity.
