Story

The Sky High Gymnastics Display Team was formed in 2022 and is part of Sky High Trampoline Gymnastics Academy based at Fun Abounds Trampoline Centre on the Bell Lane Industrial Estate. The gymnasts who take part are aged 6 to 14 years old and live mainly in Uckfield and surrounding areas.

Practice sessions take place weekly throughout the year working towards learning new skills and performance routines. The routines are always challenging and involve flips, lifts, dance moves, and lots of trust!

In summer 2023, the team performed for the second year running at the Cats Protection League Summer Fair. The challenge of performing the routines on grass rather than a sprung floor at Fun Abounds didn’t phase our gymnasts and a great day was had by all (with well deserved ice creams afterwards).

In October 2023, the team travelled to Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre to perform at GymFusion, a national gymnastics event. Organised by Sky High’s governing body, British Gymnastics, GymFusion encompasses the ethos of Gymnastics for All. It gives participants the opportunity to display their skills and talents as a team in a fun, friendly and non-competitive environment. This was the first time the team had performed to such a big audience and nerves were very much on edge. The first performance went without a hitch and despite a few hiccups in the second performance, the team were true professionals, kept on going and no one seemed to notice! To top off a successful weekend, the team had the opportunity to meet Ondine Achampong, a team GB gymnast heading to the Paris Olympics later in 2024.

Lula, 11, says: “I love being in the display team because we learn all these amazing tricks like illusions and partner skills. It’s so much fun to perform on stage and feels great to be part of a team”

What’s next for the display team?

The recently formed display team have huge ambition and want to show that Uckfield gymnasts can compete on a world stage! GymFusion was just the start, they are determined to go to bigger events both nationally and internationally, having had a taste of what they can achieve. The team has set its sights on heading to Glasgow and London later this year and then to the World Gymnaestrada in Lisbon in 2027.
