St Mary Magdalene, Duns Tew's stained glass windows are badly in need of TLC. Algal growth, severe in places, is damaging the glass and some detail is already lost. The PCC want to bring the figures on the altar window back to life and make the other windows sparkle. Please help Save Our Angels.

Story

The stained glass windows were installed nearly 160 years ago. Most, by Clayton & Bell, were part of the Gilbert Scott restoration and have painted and stained floral quarries and a double border. The three panel east window, designed by Hardman & Co depicts the Resurrection, Crucifixion and Ascension and was installed in 1864 in memory of Sir George Dashwood.

The windows inside and out are covered in dirt and grime, and the algal growth, severe in places, is damaging the glass. In addition the external iron support bars have rusted and need to be de-scaled and repainted.

Painted detail from the surface of the east window has already been lost, this is particularly noticeable on the faces, hands and feet of the two angels in the Ascension panel. Our first priority is to slow/halt further deterioration, and then we would like to see if the features can be restored. To clean and restore the east window will cost nearly £5,000 exc VAT.

The copper guard which protects the east window has corroded over time, and is now staining the stone work and needs to be replaced. It cost £10 in 1864, to replace with powder coated stainless steel and clean the stone work will cost £2,700 exc VAT.

Contrary to popular belief Duns Tew PCC receives no direct government funding or money from the Church of England. They rely on the generosity of the people who use it and fund raising, to not only heat and insure it, but to maintain both the Grade II listed building and the churchyard. Please help us "Save Our Angels".
