Baby Memorial / Footpath Access

Historically, children who died in the mid-20th century were interred in unmarked graves within the churchyard. The parish aims to install a Baby Memorial providing solace and support to those who have lost a child. We also need to improve footpaths.

Story

The church of St. Cuthbert, located in Durham City, is a significant local landmark and part of the Durham North Team of Churches. The church, constructed in the 1860s, is classified as a designated heritage asset and is situated within the Durham City Conservation Area. The churchyard is extensive and features various footpaths and gravestones. The parish has identified a need to address the church's role within the wider community, specifically in remembrance of all babies and infants lost during childbirth or early life. To meet this need, three objectives have been recognised:

·       Creating and installing a Baby Memorial - working with Lara Sparey http://www.larasparey.com/ or @laraspareydesigns

·       Improving accessibility with renewed footpaths and handrails

·       Installing signage to direct visitors to the Baby Memorial

Historically, children who died in the mid-20th century were interred in unmarked graves within the churchyard. Currently, there is no dedicated place for relatives to visit and remember these children. The church aims to provide solace and support to those who have lost a child. Additionally, the churchyard footpaths require repair as advised by a local “accessibility” charity and according to the Quinquennial Inspection carried out in 2020. The installation of the Baby Memorial and improvements to footpaths and handrails will have a positive impact on the community, providing a place for remembrance and enhancing accessibility. The church already plays an active role in the community through various events, initiatives, and programmes, catering to different demographics and fostering inclusivity. The projected expenditure includes costs for the Baby Memorial, signage, footpaths, and professional fees, totalling £83,700. The project will proceed once sufficient funds have been raised and is being managed by Michael Atkinson https://find-an-architect.architecture.com/michael-atkinson-architecture-heritage/stocksfield
