Our lovely school is surrounded by roads with high volumes of traffic congestion and pollution. There is now a much-increased understanding of the impact of pollution on our health, and an awareness that this impact is much worse for younger children with those in the most polluted areas suffering permanent reduction in lung capacity as well as increases in asthma.
In 2018, generous funding from Southwark Council meant that we were able to install Green Screens at the Lake Building site on Dulwich Village. The ivy Green Screens act as a barrier to block the harmful pollutants at vehicle exhaust height and capture the pollutants on the surface area of the leaves. The pollutants are then simply washed away by rain, removing them entirely from the local environment and allow the ivy leaves to repeat the process. The Green Screens are pre-grown, and their impact is immediate. Evidence from other London schools shows that installing green screens can reduce the levels of traffic-related pollutants inside the screen by almost 50 per cent.
We are fundraising to install a further Green Screen on the Francis Building site on the corner of Dulwich Village and Turney Road.
Every child at the school will benefit from cleaner, safer air straight away. The screen will further benefit the local community with its aesthetic, environmental and air cleansing properties. The reduction in pollution will benefit the wider community as well as those at the school.
We hope that many parents, carers, relatives and neighbouring residents will be able to support this important initiative to make a positive impact on our local air quality.
