Our proposal
We are looking to secure a central and primely located piece of land, which has been identified by local experts as a suitable long-term solution for the wider community of East Lothian and generations to come. The appeal is URGENT. We have very little time to source and provide the funds.
WAFA has initiated this project to create a truly inclusive Community Campus - one that brings together people of all backgrounds, cultures, ages and faiths. The vision is not simply to construct new buildings, but to establish a welcoming hub where residents can learn, play, connect, receive support and participate in a wide range of educational, sporting, cultural and wellbeing activities.
The Campus is intended to serve the whole community and respond to the clear need for accessible, multi-use facilities within this rapidly growing area.
Need / Rationale
An assessment and feasibility study carried out by WAFA highlights a clear gap in community infrastructure across East Lothian. The Council area has experienced sustained population growth, significant new housing development and increasing demographic diversity, yet the availability of flexible, multi-use community facilities has not kept pace.
East Lothian has one of the lowest levels of ethnic diversity within comparable Scottish council areas, with only 3.06% of residents from minority backgrounds compared with a national average of 7.59%. Councils of similar size, such as Stirling, Midlothian, East Renfrewshire and West Lothian, benefit from a wider range of community, cultural and social support facilities that help promote integration and inclusion.
A similar pattern exists regarding faith, cultural and wellbeing provision: several Scottish councils with smaller minority populations have established community hubs, cultural centres, places of worship, wellness programmes and multi-use spaces that bring residents together and strengthen social cohesion. East Lothian, by contrast, has limited dedicated facilities that serve minority groups or provide culturally responsive support, which can make it challenging for new and existing residents to access appropriate spaces for learning, wellbeing, community activity and social connection.
The proposed Community Campus seeks to address this wider gap by providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents, regardless of background. As part of this broader offer, the facility will also include prayer space that can be used by the Muslim community. This forms just one element of a wider multi-purpose campus designed to support integration and shared community use.
Overall, the need for accessible indoor activity spaces, cultural and learning facilities, wellbeing support areas, and places that promote community cohesion is clear. This project responds directly to those needs in a balanced and inclusive way.
