Story

The Eden Project Sleep Out is an annual event when a hardy group of supporters come together by the iconic biomes to brave a cold November night outside.

This event and others like it are not attempting to replicate homelessness; no event could replicate the horror of sleeping rough night after night without an end in sight.

Sleep Out events aim to shine a light on this issue at a time of year when things get even harder for people who are homeless or insecurely housed. This event also raises vital funds, which supports Amber's work over the winter period.

To give a sense of what a difference funds will make to the young people who stay at Amber here is Abbey’s story.

Abbey came to Amber fleeing an abusive relationship.

“I didn’t feel like I had other options and I was in fear of my life.”

Abbey found out about Amber through a friend and able was able to refer herself.

“I was so nervous at the start. I did not think I would end up staying longer than a week. But I felt so safe there and everyone was so supportive.”

Abbey spent 6 months at Amber’s Devon Centre, Ashley Court, and during that time, she attended a range of workshops and sessions, which she found really helpful.

“I feel I had a lot to improve on. The sessions were really relatable.”

While at Amber Abbey decided she wanted to work in the care industry. Since moving on, she has secured a job in a care home and has a flat of her own nearby.

Abbey is now looking to the future with hope.

“Coming to Amber saved my life – it genuinely did. I think I would be dead if it wasn’t for this place. Moving on does feel like a big achievement though and I am proud of myself but I wouldn’t have done it without the positivity of everyone at Amber. I want to say the biggest thank you to them for supporting me and helping me get through everything I have! I will always cherish my time at Amber and be grateful for the amazing people I met.”

Abbey’s story shows that, with the right support, young people can move on from trauma to a bright independent future.

The Sleep Out at Eden is a very special event. Previous years have seen appearances by Raynor Winn, author of the Salt Path, and the renowned Cornish musician Suzi Mac.

As ever, there will be talks, workshops and performances in the evening before everyone beds down for the night in the shadow of the biomes.
