While many people in the West regard elephants with affection and admiration, the animals often inspire fear and anger in those who share their land. Elephants frequently raid and destroy crops and over the last few years have caused 5 fatalities in the area that the Rainbow Herb womans community farm.
Elephants eat up to 450kg of food per day. They are messy eaters, uprooting and scattering as much as is eaten. A single elephant makes light work of a hectare of crops in a very short time.
Small farmers - already economically vulnerable can lose their entire livelihood overnight from an elephant raid.
The community want to live alongside the elephants and protect both their livelihood and preserve their abundant wildlife. To do this they require an elephant proof fence around their farmland as well as creating an area that is more interesting to the elephants so they don't need to raid the ladies crops.
