Forgotten No More: Help Us Honour Elizabeth Heyrick
In 1824, a woman from Leicester changed history. While others spoke of gradual abolition, Elizabeth Heyrick dared to demand the immediate end of slavery. Her words were clear, her courage unmatched—and yet, history has all but erased her.
We’re here to change that.
The Elizabeth Heyrick Society is launching a campaign to restore her rightful place in Britain’s story—through education and public memorial.
Phase One: Education for Change
We are developing free, high-quality educational resources for schools in the UK.
Designed with teachers, historians, and creative professionals, these materials will introduce children to Heyrick’s powerful legacy and inspire new conversations about justice, activism, and forgotten voices.
Your support now lays the foundation for this powerful legacy.
Why It Matters
Elizabeth Heyrick was one of the first people in Britain to publicly and unequivocally call for the immediate end of slavery. At a time when even leading male abolitionists urged delay, she refused to compromise on justice.
She deserves more than a footnote. She deserves to be taught, remembered, honoured.
“The most eloquent and compelling of the advocates of 'immediatism' were women and the most dynamic of them was Elizabeth Heyrick, a Quaker schoolteacher from Leicester.” — David Olusoga OBE, Founding Patron
