It has been an incredibly challenging year for our partners in Thailand. Ongoing land rights issues could not be resolved, and with Chu now needing much closer care than ever before, the project has been forced to relocate slightly. The cost of this move has been enormous. Higher running expenses at the new property—along with essential repairs and the loss of usual income sources—have completely drained their resources.
"Chu’s age-related needs have increased rapidly. She has required supplemental food for some time due to poor digestion and age-related tooth loss, and carrying these much-needed feeds on foot into the deep forest was becoming increasingly impractical for the staff. Chu is much older than initially thought, and the deep forest comes with risk for elderly elephants. While her mahout was always close by, if she were to fall or become unwell, getting veterinary help quickly would not have been possible. Even without the land issues, bringing her in for closer monitoring was becoming necessary. The new location is therefore far more suitable for Chu as she enters her “grandma era.” The new home is a beautiful environment for the elephants, with open grass fields, forest, a fresh stream, and a large pond. It was once an elephant camp many years ago, but after sitting unused for so long, it had become very run-down. Extensive work has been required to make it safe and comfortable for both the elephants and their dedicated caretakers. While huge progress has been made, things still aren’t ideal just yet."
