End Polio

In 1988 125 countries were rife with Polio, severely disabling thousands of children. Rotary International partnered with others in a bid to rid the world of Polio. With just 2 countries left, we cannot give up now. Please give generously

We are an award-winning Rotary club, moving forward rapidly, active in the local community, with a can-do attitude and an informal approach. Our club has the most diverse membership of any Rotary clubs in the region, in terms of age, gender and ethnicity with varied meeting opportunities at the Inn on the Lake, Bletchley, over zoom, or occasionally at the Holiday Inn. Meetings are generally on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month but when we hold an event, that takes the place of a regular meeting. Our regular fortnightly newsletter and WhatsApp group keeps everyone up to date. Annual fundraising events are held for local charities and international projects: Swimathon Lend A Hand Santa Collection

Story

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. Most know it as Polio and in 1988 125 countries were affected.

The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and, in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine, one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. In 2016 there were only 3 affected countries, Africa, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In 2020 Africa was declared Polio free!
