Story
Thank you SO much for this golden opportunity! “I thought these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities only happened in movies! Now it's happening to me, and I'm in utter shock. My teachers couldn't be prouder! Calista, EwC Scholar 2023-25
The Engage with China Scholarship changes lives & builds cultural bridges
This newly established, pioneering, Engage with China Scholarship programme changes lives by creating a unique educational opportunity for British students to study A-levels in a bi-lingual environment at a boarding school in China. Mainly selected from the state-maintained sector, EwC Scholars develop mandarin skills and discover China for themselves as well as benefiting from a world-class academic education and boarding experience. The scholarship is the brainchild of UK educational charity, Engage with China (EwC) and Wycombe Abbey Schools in China.
Importantly, the scholarship programme facilitates a cultural exchange between students from China and the UK. By bringing together individuals from different backgrounds, this initiative promotes two-way cultural understanding, shifts perspectives, boosts global citizenship, nurtures tolerance and fosters a mutual appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. What's more, deep friendships are made.
I was over the moon to be granted the scholarship. It's perfect. I'm speechless! It's been a life-changing opportunity. I have fallen in love with China and with rowing!” says Michael S, EwC 2023 Scholar
We need your financial support today
Our world needs more peace, tolerance and kindness. Through this unique and immersive opportunity, EwC scholars will develop a truly global mindset and learn to see the world from the perspective of a country that is having a huge impact on the world today and one which is little understood. Please help us financially to ensure the sustainability of the Scholarship programme so that EwC can support the scholars whilst they are in China and their families in the UK; continue to build future opportunities for them and enable more young people to benefit from the scholarship programme. It currently costs EwC £1,000 per year per scholar to manage this programme. Thank you for your generosity. Global Citizenship
The EwC Scholarship Programme fosters global citizenship by promoting mutual respect, cultural appreciation, and a sense of responsibility towards addressing global challenges. By nurturing well-rounded individuals, the programme will contribute to the development of future leaders who can make a positive impact on a global scale. Through further collaboration with EwC, Scholars are able to participate in the EwC 'Good Cop Bad Cop' annual, climate-change Model UN conference.
I loved being part of the EwC Good Cop Bad Cop Model UN Conference this year and debating with students from all around the world. Please make sure that I can participate again next year, Charlie P, EwC 2023-25 Scholar
Extra-curricular enrichment
Beyond the classroom each student has the privilege of choosing from a huge variety of options from the sporting arena to the concert and performing arts platform to robotics. Some of the Scholars will even come to Henley to compete in the regatta.
“Student-to-student exchange is one of the most effective ways to boost bilateral ties between nations and their people. This EwC scholarship brings people from all backgrounds in the UK to school in China. This enables an exchange of cultures, a change of perspective from the exchange country and boosts bilateral ties and has the potential to increase trade and opportunities in the future. My experience of China shows how different reality can be from stereotypes and the imagery portrayed on mainstream news. I know that the impressive status of being a scholar will provide a major boost to my CV.” Ivan S, EwC 2023-25 Scholar
