Exotic animals have become popular as pets in the UK.
In 2017 we received reports about 57,798 exotic animals. Sadly, many people are unaware of how much of a commitment these animals are. Not understanding fully what they need can result in poor animal welfare and animal suffering.
Reptiles and amphibians are ectothermic animals (sometimes referred to as cold blooded) meaning they cannot produce their own body heat and instead rely on the temperature of their surroundings to warm up or cool down. If they are not warm enough their muscles will not function properly, which will make them unable to move. Too warm an environment risks the animal overheating and dying as a result.
Our Inspectors often come across them by chance when visiting peoples homes or offices to investigate cruelty of other species such as cats and dogs. However only our ten Exotics Specialist Inspectors currently have the equipment necessary to make an accurate assessment of the environment provided and the welfare of these animals.
How you can help
£221 is the cost of one exotics assessment pack.
We need 340
Total cost of £75,140 to ensure every Inspector has this vital equipment.
Every penny you donate will be used to purchase this equipment. Should we raise insufficient funds we will use them to buy as many packs as we can. Should we raise surplus funds we will buy additional equipment to assess or transport exotic animals.
If you would like to buy an Exotics Assessment Pack for one of your local Inspectors it really will be the gift that keeps on giving by saving lives for years to come.
