Story

Help Facing the Future support 500 more people bereaved by suicide in 2026

Facing the Future provides free online support groups for people who have lost a loved one to suicide. In 2025 we supported over 300 people. But we know the need is far greater. With your help, in 2026 we’re aiming to raise £25,000 so that we can support 500 more people bereaved by suicide, by providing 50 additional support groups.

Being bereaved by suicide is ‘grief with the volume turned up’. Imagine your best friend crossing the road to avoid talking to you because they don’t know what to say.

Or not wanting to answer when someone asks, “How are you?” because you’re too afraid of upsetting them with your reply.

People who have lost someone to suicide are up to three times more likely to consider suicide themselves and often suffer isolation and judgment at the time when they need support the most.

Facing the Future brings people together who are in this situation, a club no-one wants to be in. In a Facing the Future group, people can start talking at the point where most conversations have petered out, share complex feelings that will be understood by people who are in a similar situation, and learn from the survival of others — at whatever point they are with their grief.

The feedback we have from group participants is that they felt safe and heard, their range of feelings were acknowledged, and they have found understanding about their situation. For many, it is a start to looking to a new future.

It costs around £50 per person to provide support through 6 weekly 90-minute online group sessions, assisted by two trained facilitators. We provide this support to participants free of charge.

We are deeply grateful to our donors who helped us to achieve our 2025 fundraising targets and to our hosts Central London Samaritans.

With your donation in 2026, we can continue to provide this vital service to anyone in the UK affected by suicide loss who is seeking understanding and support to face

the future. Thank you for giving whatever you can.

Testimonials from previous group participants

“Listening to how others felt and them asking questions helped me to formulate my own emotions and reactions”

“Learning to be with one's grief and to allow it in, is the only way through. Being with people that know your pain and that are not judging and are there for the same reasons as you is very healing and supportive. Facing the Future brought me into a circle of my people”

“The grief was still there, but I was no longer alone with it. Finally there were people who understood. Friends and family are kind and well-intentioned but often say the wrong thing in their efforts to comfort and console. My new friends at Facing the Future understood implicitly so there was no need to explain”
