Story
At Ferriers Barn, every day starts with a simple but powerful moment β someone arrives, often quietly, sometimes anxious, and is met with a smile, a familiar face, and a place where they truly belong.
For many of the adults we support, this is the only place they feel part of a community. Without Ferriers Barn, their days would look very different β long hours at home, limited social interaction, and increasing isolation. For families and carers, it would mean the loss of vital respite, often leaving them exhausted and overwhelmed.
We are a small, independent charity based in Bures, supporting adults with a wide range of disabilities. We provide structured days filled with meaningful activities β from woodwork and pottery to drama, dance, and time outdoors. But what we really offer goes far beyond activities. We offer connection, routine, purpose, and dignity.
Take one of our members, who struggled to engage in group settings and found social environments overwhelming. Over time, with patient support and encouragement, they began to join in β first quietly, then more confidently. Now, they greet others, take part in activities, and have formed genuine friendships. Their family has told us it has been life-changing β not just for them, but for everyone around them.
Stories like this are not unusual here. They are what Ferriers Barn is all about. But they donβt happen by chance β they happen because we have the right staff, the right environment, and the time to support each individual properly.
The challenge is that we receive no government funding. We rely on a combination of fees, fundraising, and donations to keep going. Like many charities, we are facing rising costs β staffing, transport, utilities, and the everyday expenses that come with running a safe and supportive service. At the same time, demand for what we offer continues to grow.
Every pound we receive helps us keep providing this essential support. It helps us maintain our minibus service so members can attend, fund activities that build confidence and skills, and ensure we have enough staff to give each person the attention they need.
Without continued funding, services like ours simply cannot survive β and the people who rely on us would be the ones who lose out the most.
By supporting Ferriers Barn, you are not just funding a day centre. You are helping reduce isolation, supporting families, and creating a community where people are valued, included, and given the opportunity to thrive.
Your support helps someone walk through our doors and feel, perhaps for the first time that week, that they are not alone.
And that is why we need your help. π
