St Andrew’s is likely to have been in the centre of a (deserted) Anglo Saxon village originally. Eleven Anglo Saxon stone sculptures are located inside and early stone fragments can also be seen in its walls.
It was patronised by the Fitzhugh and Wyvill families and is believed to have been the location of a Synod in 768.
The church needs a complete re-roof (estimated cost £250,000) because the condition of the thin stone slate tiles covering the nave roof (north and south slopes) is poor – the slates have bowed and many have broken over recent years.
Grants have been and will continue to be applied for.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could help us to preserve this beautiful building which is still used for services.
