Story

Our families are dreading the reduction in Universal Credit. One food bank user told us:

"I already cant afford to get the bus to the food bank so have to walk. What am I going to now the £20 is cut? People think I'm lazy, but my medication makes it so hard for me to find work."

At Dads House, we have seen first-hand the severe harm that Covid-19 has had on the local community. Many of our families have felt vulnerable and have sadly plunged into poverty. The £20 increase to Universal Credit helped to alleviate poverty at such a crucial time, especially with gas and electric bills soaring.

On 19th September, The Guardian newspaper reported that the Universal credit cut will push 800,000 people into poverty. Billy McGranaghan, Founder and CEO of Dads House explains:

''We help hundreds of people a week and that £20 is a lifeline for so many families. It can be the difference between having hot and or food. Some of the stories we hear from our beneficiaries are heart breaking''.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, on average 21 per cent of all working-age families in Britain, either with or without children, will experience a £1,040 a year cut to their incomes. We are desperate to help our families live with dignity and give them a vital safety net.

By donating to our new campaign, you will help ensure our food bank is well stocked so we can provide necessities (food, toiletries, sanitary products) to people suffering financial hardship. Funds also help to cover volunteer expenses, who deliver food to people with disabilities that are unable to attend our food bank.

PLEASE DONATE WHAT YOU CAN AND SHARE THIS PAGE A WIDELY AS POSSIBLE.
