Story
According to the British Heart Foundation, 33,000 people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year and without CPR only one in ten will survive. Early defibrillation has been identified as the most important intervention, with survival rates increasing on average to at least five in ten.
With this in mind and following a day at the University of Birmingham Medical school, health and social care students decided they wanted to raise some money for a defibrillator for the school and the local community. They will cumulatively walk 33,000 laps of the yard, one lap to represent each person who experiences an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year. Other students and staff will also be joining the walk to help clock up the laps. We are looking forward to purchasing this life-saving equipment.
