Progress, Not Perfection: My 30 for 30 Health Habits Reset
Hello. My name is Jo and I am Patient Insights Manager at the PBC Foundation. We are celebrating 30 years of the Foundation this year and, in support of our 30 for 30 campaign, I have challenged myself to record 30 vlogs. I have never vlogged before so what could possibly go wrong?!
It took me a while to decide what my 30 for 30 challenge would be. I would have liked it to be something like 30 30-minute workouts in 30 days. However, it was very clear to me that this is just not possible right now, mainly due to injury and adapting to symptoms of perimenopause, which have hit me hard.
At the time of starting the vlog, I was struggling physically and mentally and realised I needed to start prioritising my health. I generally know what works well for me, what supports my physical and mental wellbeing and yet many of those habits had fallen away and I was choosing behaviour that had a detrimental effect on my wellbeing. I found myself thinking that I couldn’t be the only person in this position and an idea slowly started to form that I couldn’t let go.
I needed to make changes, rebuild habits, build some new habits, and I knew it wouldn’t be easy – even though I knew those changes would improve my physical and mental wellbeing. I decided to record my progress and share my journey as part of the 30 for 30 campaign in the hope that it will help others.
I don’t know exactly where this journey will take me. I hope I’ll be stronger, healthier and maybe even back to jogging or joining a gym class again. But whatever happens, I’ll be sharing it honestly—the successes, the setbacks and everything in between.
If my journey encourages just one person to take a small step towards improved wellbeing, or reminds someone that they’re not alone, then it will have been worth it.
Mo’s ‘Strength, My Way’
Mo is our Head of Patient Services and, in support of the PBC Foundation’s 30th anniversary year, has set herself the personal challenge of completing 30 training sessions and sharing reflections on what strength means to her.
Mo’s training sessions focus on true functional fitness that builds strength, balance, stability, and confidence needed for her everyday life living with PBC.
Mo will be asking herself “What did strength look like this week?” and she would love you to follow along on her journey.
Rebecca’s Swim Campaign Also “Dips” into Canada’s Lakes
Hi, my name is Rebecca and I am the Head of Research and Education here at the Foundation.
I wanted to contribute to our 30 for 30 campaign and share some thoughts and photos of my mission!
I will be aiming to swim 30km before Christmas.
I learnt to swim as a child but then barely swam for years. After being diagnosed with another chronic autoimmune disease in my 40’s I decided to teach myself to swim front crawl, and it changed so much more than my swimming.
It helps me to manage my symptoms, supports my mental health and has introduced me to an amazing social community.
I swim wherever I can, although you will usually find me at my favourite outside pool.
After being married for 19 years we are finally off on our (very!) late honeymoon to Canada this summer where I will be swimming in different pools, and lakes along the way and sharing my adventures.
If my journey encourages just one person to give swimming a go, then it will be worth every lap!
