The Foundling Museum tells the story of the Foundling Hospital; London's first home for abandoned children and of three major figures in British history: its campaigning founder the philanthropist Thomas Coram, the artist William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel.

Story

This comes at a critical time for the museum and will hopefully ensure the Foundling is able to continue to deliver its community programs and tell the story of social care in this country for years to come.

Joined by friends and family along the way, they started their endeavour in Berkhamsted, final home of the Foundling Hospital until 1954 and journeyed to our current historic site in Bloomsbury covering over 28 miles.

At the Museum, we tell the story of the Foundling Hospital, the UKs first children's charity and its first public art gallery the result of a centuries-old project designed to care for and educate London's most vulnerable citizens. Today, our mission is to transform lives through creative action, especially young people leaving care, disadvantaged children and struggling families.

We believe in the power of the arts to improve young lives and the power of artists to inspire social change. We do this by working in partnership with local nurseries to provide artist-led workshops that improve wellbeing, through ground-breaking training and mentorship programmes for care-leavers and programmes with people experiencing mental distress. Our exhibition programme raises awareness of the challenges faced by children in care and gives care experienced people visibility within British art and culture. We work with some of the leading creative figures of today to bring our historic story to life and contribute to the ongoing story of the Museum.

Claire and Ron were inspired to complete this challenge and trace the history of the Museum to raise awareness of the work we do and raise the critical funds we need to continue our ambitions. We hope you will consider supporting this incredible feat as all funds raised will go directly to the Museum, ensuring our activity and work can continue for generations to come. Thank you.
