Story

What you spray on to make you smell nice in the morning could end in someone with asthma having an asthma attack which could prove fatal.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike the CEO of Asthma and Allergy Foundation knows only too well the consequences. This is her story of the dramatic moment a medical emergency changed her future.

The CEO of Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, had an asthma attack which was triggered by a colleague’s perfume and was pronounced dead. How she came back to life is still a mystery to so many, including her doctors. Martina has dedicated her life to helping fellow asthma sufferers live well with their asthma.

Thousands of adults and children with asthma we support daily share how strong smells (fragrances) impact their asthma. “I did not know my perfume was gradually killing my child, I can’t thank Asthma and Allergy Foundation enough for their help” this is a statement from a mum whose 8-year-old daughter was in hospital every week due to her asthma.

On 13th June 2024, Asthma and Allergy Foundation is launching the National Fragrance-Free Day to help raise awareness of the many things that can trigger asthma, including perfume and raise vital funds to continue to provide evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and support to people with asthma, their families, and carers.
