Story
There is a shifting population of refugees and asylum seekers living in hotel accommodation in Osborne Road. Many are families with young children, yet due to a lack of communal living space they are largely confined to their rooms. Few speak any English.
The Friends of Jesmond Library decided to open the library on Fridays, when it is normally closed, as dedicated space for refugees. English language classes are provided by qualified volunteers, refreshments are provided and our extensive collection of childrens toys, books and jigsaws available to enjoy. Our volunteers are on hand to offer English conversation, play board games and find useful information.
We would like to invite the local community to help us cover the costs of Friends Fridays, such as refreshments, English Language study books, photocopying and heating in the winter.
Please help us to give a warm Jesmond welcome to those who have been through so much before they arrived here. We are asking particularly now for help to give the refugee children a Christmas party, complete with seasonal food, games and a small present each from Santa.
Let's give them a Christmas to remember!
