Furnishing Futures is a charity based in East London creating trauma-informed, healing spaces for women and children who have fled domestic abuse, in partnership with the interiors industry. We are transforming a women and children's refuge in London with the interior designers Rebecca Wakefield, Laura Hammett and Jojo Barr of House Nine Design. We have already transformed the living room (see photos) and are now moving onto the bedrooms, bathrooms and garden playroom.
We will be refurbishing each bedroom, removing the metal bunk beds and making the rooms welcoming and comfortable for the women and children who are living in the refuge. We also need to completely replace the outdoor playroom, and create a safe and relaxing garden.
At present, the bedrooms have uncomfortable metal bunk beds; the curtains are inadequate and there is little furniture and no decoration to make the rooms feel welcoming and safe. We want to transform all seven bedrooms and bathrooms into cosy, welcoming, comfortable spaces for the women and children who can spend six months or more living in the refuge after fleeing domestic abuse.
We are also replacing the outdoor playroom, which is a portacabin that is out of use as it is damp and dangerous. We plan to replace it with a more suitable garden cabin as a children's playroom, and to landscape the garden.
We have some funding to cover the cost of some of the trades and essential items, but it will not be enough to create the change we want to achieve for these courageous women and children. We are fundraising to ensure every space is the best it can be for the women and children who are living in the refuge, and we would be grateful for anything you can contribute so that we can ensure everything is done to the highest possible standard, as we support these families on their journey to recovery. Thank you for helping.
