Help us continue our fight for an organic future
What a 6 months it’s been. With the announcement of a general election in the summer it felt like the UK ground to a halt. All decision-making seemed to be deferred and we waited with bated breath to see what would happen.
With a new government in place, and the summer recess over, it’s time to get back to business, and campaigning for the environment needs to be high on the agenda.
Urban ban on pesticides
In July we launched a campaign to ban urban pesticides. Led by the Pesticide Collaboration, of which we’re a founding member, the campaign is calling on the government to commit to a phase-out of urban pesticides in publicly-run areas across the UK. This, in practice, will mean that pesticides would not be permitted for use in streets, playgrounds and green spaces following the examples of France, Denmark and Luxembourg, which have all successfully banned pesticide use in villages, towns and cities.
So far more than 150 councillors and 17,000 members of the public have joined us and our collaboration partners in supporting this campaign. However, we need to keep up the pressure.
We’re still talking about peat…
After decades of campaigning against the use of peat in horticulture, we were delighted when a ban on the sale of peat was announced. Yet, months later, we’re still awaiting the legislative mechanism to make this happen.
Peat bogs are a rare and uniquely valuable resource, home to a wealth of plants, birds and insects. They also store three times more carbon than a forest.
Great strides have been made by companies to develop peat-free growing media, and yet many still remain opposed to a ban. We mustn’t let the progress made here falter.
Help us continue this work
We must keep the pressure up on decision-makers. A donation to our Fighting Fund helps us to cover the costs of our campaigning activities, allowing us to react when necessary.
