The GCR 567 Locomotive Group has been formed to construct a classic Victorian express steam locomotive using original designs and modern techniques. Once combined with the carriages of the Great Central Railway Rolling Stock Trust it will re-create a typical Edwardian train from the early years of the Great Central Railway’s London Extension. These elegant 4-4-0s, designated Class 2, were the pride of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR). Indeed the GCR’s legendary first Chairman, Sir Edward Watkin, was so pleased with his Class 2, it was immortalised as the locomotive which features in the company crest. While we’ll incorporate some minor changes, the new 567 will be externally indistinguishable from its predecessors. The project is well underway at its base at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) (GCRN) site in Ruddington just south of Nottingham. The frames have been constructed and the project has benefited from major donor components including a cylinder block, GCR tender and coupling rods. It is estimated it could be complete in 4 to 7 years at a cost of around half a million pounds with £200,000 already raised It is a very exciting new build locomotive project that will bring the sights, sounds and smell of Victorian mainline express travel back to life. Regular donations will help us achieve our goal as we focus on completing the locomotive. See www.gcr567loco.co.uk for further details

Story

GCR 1903 Vintage Train Rescue Appeal

1903 Edwardian GCR Carriage No.799 is as risk of being scrapped. A serious moment!

If you like the idea of a vintage Edwardian train like the one in the image shown, then we need financial support, to move this vehicle to our safe site at Lilbourne. The RST indicates we are this vehicle’s last chance of rescue. It must go to a registered charity or be scrapped at Ruddington has no space for this type of long term project.

The 567 group can’t divert money raised for the locomotive to carriage rescue, so we have personally already kicked things off by raising £1,000 from GCR 567 & RST trustees. We need now to raise £1,000 that with gift aid added should allow transport to Lilbourne and the 8x 20ft scrap rails to move the vehicle around that site and sit under the carriage where it’s stored on that site.

Those who want to support this endeavour, please donate on the link and save the vehicle for future restoration. The 567 group already has a grounded matching Robinson Brake No.575, this is the bones of a potential matched rake of vehicles to recreate trains that would have run on the Great Central Railways London Extension from Manchester to London when first built.

The GCR 567 Group would keep the carriage secure for another group to restore, if such a group cannot be located, a fresh group would be set up to restore the Edwardian Vintage GC Train, should look great with 567 being the motive power.

Vehicle has to be moved by end of April 2026, so please give generously.

Image: LNER D7 5685 at Silkstone 1928 with a Robinson Brake like 575 and carriages like 799. A sight we have a chance of recreating with this rescue.

Let’s keep this 123 year old vehicle safe for future restoration. Thank You in advance!
