Delivering the Geneva Declaration on Human Rights at Sea

Organised by Human Rights at Sea

The project concept is to deliver a plain-English soft law instrument which captures and promotes the legal concept of human rights at sea and the founding principle that human rights apply at sea as they do on land.

Human Rights at Sea has been established for the benefit of the international community for matters concerning explicit engagement with human rights issues in the maritime environment. Our aim is to explicitly raise awareness, implementation and accountability of human rights provisions throughout the maritime environment, especially where they are currently absent, ignored or being abused.

Story

The Geneva Declaration on Human Rights at Sea® (the Declaration), which reflects existing international law, is in the process of being developed along with international organisations, civil society, commercial entities and individual experts. The first draft was published on 5 April 2019 and was endorsed and is supported by the City of Geneva .

Further development and amendments will be undertaken over the coming years in Geneva with the aim of ensuring compliance with international human rights at sea, particularly in areas beyond territorial jurisdiction.
