Story

Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home should consider renaming themselves Gables Fat Farm, as yet another morbidly obese canine has waddled their way into the home for help. Georgie Porgie is only 6 years old and currently weighs a colossal 70kg, double what a healthy male malamute should weigh. His immense size means he finds standing, walking and breathing a real struggle and can only have very limited exercise as he begins his weight loss journey. Once he has made a good start to his weight loss he will begin the search for a new loving home with experienced husky or malamute owners.

Georgie Porgie already had a weight problem when taken on by his previous owner, but after finding that they could not afford the veterinary diet required to help him lose weight, and resorting to cheap dog food and table scraps, the problem began to escalate. This was further exacerbated when the neighbours began throwing pasties and sausage rolls over the fence for him to chow down on as well. He now needs to lose more than 35kg and has been put on the correct veterinary diet. He is also receiving pain relief for his bad joints and is at a very high risk of developing diabetes and other weight related medical issues. It is estimated that it will cost the Home over £800 for the veterinary diet, ongoing treatment and aftercare he needs.

Georgie Porgie has found his way into Deputy Manager Ruth Rickards home as, like his predecessors Hattie the Fattie and Big Bopper the Whopper, he is also far too big to fit comfortably in the kennels. Ruth had this to say: Each time we have an obese animal come into us we think, thats it, thats as big as well ever see. Then sadly in comes another even bigger than the last. Its just heart breaking because it is so easy to prevent, but we will build on our previous success and get him slimmed down. We are so proud of the work we do here and dogs like Georgie Porgie help to remind us of what it means to be a true non-euthanasia charity.
