Story
Bridlington Sea Cadets is a small unit based in the Seaside town of Bridlington. The town is now classed as one of the most deprived places in Britain with some areas being classed in the top 3% most deprived areas in the country.
We have worked with another unit this year in a neighbouring town to reach a point where next year, our cadets are qualified to take our trinity class rowing boat out from our local boat yard rather than restricting the activity to those who can afford to travel.
Rowing is an activity where each member of the crew is doing the same task. This promotes teamwork but does little to promote self-confidence.
Sailing gives each cadet a separate task. Each depends on the others but has responsibility for their area.
By providing a program of free activities including sailing and rowing, we plan to enable those from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance for exercise and fun but more importantly, the longer lasting benefits of increased confidence, and expanded horizons.
