Story
Dear sponsors and friends of the Giraffe Project Children’s Charity,
The Dandora slum in Kenya’s capital Nairobi sits right next to the city’s main dumpsite. Every day, thousands of people comb through the waste in search of food, recyclable plastic or other valuable items. The dumpsite is an environmental hazard – the burning of waste fills the air with toxic smoke, which is extremely damaging to health. Crime rates are high in the surrounding communities, making them dangerous especially for young girls.
Many families who work on the dumpsite cannot afford the school fees for their children. This is particularly true for secondary boarding schools, which in addition to fees, generate startup costs for uniforms, books, bedding, etc. On average, these come to roughly EUR 300 per child.
In January 2026 we hope to offer sponsorship to at least 30 new secondary students from the Dandora slum. With this year’s Christmas appeal, we would like to cover their startup costs.
