Keep Glencoe’s Story Alive

Please help overhaul and protect our Museum in the Scottish Highlands for future generations to enjoy. Every pound helps and we are grateful for donations of any size.

Set within traditional 19th century heather-thatched cottages, Glencoe Folk Museum holds an eclectic array of objects celebrating local heritage and providing an insight into the history of the area and its people. We aspire to be the heart of our community, inspiring local and global visitors.

Story

We thought that THEY ought to make a museum to record daily life. But THEY do not exist so we did it ourselves. - Barbara Fairweather M.B.E.

Help us give Glencoe's Past a Future

For more than 50 years, Glencoe Folk Museum has been at the heart of our community.

Founded by local women who stood in front of bulldozers to save our cottages from demolition, it has grown into a much-loved home for 6,000 artefacts — from the everyday objects of Highland life to rare Jacobite treasures.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve already raised £2.8 million to redevelop the Museum. We have planning permission, listed building consent, and the building warrant. Designs are complete. Contractors are ready to begin.

But rising costs, inflation, and unavoidable delays have created a funding gap. We need to raise £100,000. This final piece of funding will allow us to deliver the full vision for a museum that’s exciting, accessible, and sustainable.

Anyone contributing over £50 will be immortalised on our Tree of Sponsors, based on the design of the traditional Clan Donald genealogical chart.

****To ensure we can add you to our Tree, you must tick the box that says; "Im happy for Glencoe Folk Museum to keep in touch with me by email"so that we can add you to the Tree of Sponsors. Otherwise, we won't know your name to put on the tree.***

Why this Redevelopment Matters

Our 19th-century thatched cottages are beautiful but no longer meet modern standards. We currently can’t offer toilets for visitors, full accessibility, or the facilities needed to sustain the Museum’s future.

This redevelopment will:

- Restore and protect our unique thatched cottages.

- Create a fully accessible entrance and exhibition space.

- Build a Community Gallery for local groups, artists, and heritage projects.

- Digitise our collection so Glencoe’s stories can be shared worldwide.

- Employ a Learning and Engagement Officer to inspire schools, young people, and volunteers.

- Secure the Museum’s long-term sustainability with a new shop, online resources, and an extended season.
