Guru Nanak Gurdwara is a landmark Sikh place of worship based in Smethwick.
It is also one of the oldest and was recently listed by Historic England.
The Gurdwaras iconic dome was built in 1997. It is 40 tonne of concrete which crowns the Gurdwara building. It was plated using a brass alloy metal polished with a gold finish. Some of these materials were imported from India. Due to weathering, pollution and lack of maintenance the dome soon started losing its beautiful shine.
After extensive investigation the Gurdwara started a project which included the cleaning the facade and renovations to the dome. The dome has been scaffolded (5 levels), the brass fixtures and fittings have been removed, all previous paint coatings and the majority of repair compounds have been completely removed by shot blasting exposing the original concrete.
Due to the very high access costs, imperfections and blowholes will be made good with a specialist concrete repair system, followed by a curing membrane and finally the weathershield paint.
All of the new fixtures and fittings are being remanufactured locally in the United Kingdom, these will withstand weathering, pollution and will require minimal maintenance.
We humbly request everyone to share our campaign and to support this project, so that the Gurdwara gleams majestically once again.
