Crisis
When women become widows, it is a particularly distressing time for them. They must find a new source of income to take care of the family within place of their husband. This can be especially difficult in some communities across Africa, where women are under cultural pressure to refrain from working outside. This prevents them from pursuing a source of income that involves working in the outdoors. As farming is often the main source of income in communities, it can therefore be extremely difficult to find work for widows.
Our Response
In spite of not being able to work outside, Global One has found a solution for these widows. We have created a programme that will enable widowed women living in extreme poverty to generate an income through farming. The solution really is easy: greenhouses!
Windows of opportunity are now opened to widows struggling to find a reliable source of income. As the shelter of a greenhouse allows them to farm vegetables inside, the cultural norm is therefore not broken. So far we have constructed one greenhouse in Nigeria, and have seen the impact that a simple greenhouse can have on a womans life.
Location
This project is specifically in Nigeria and we hope to transfer it to Kenya.
The Impact
You can help us to provide a livelihood to widowed women in Africa. Such a simple solution that can help an impoverished woman generate income for 5 years.
